I think it would depend on the food you were buying, some foods like lamb for example are always outdoor reared and usually grass fed so in this instance I would go for local. Take bananas though which are heavily sprayed with chemicals and I would definitely go for organic.

Local, organic, and in season is my ultimate goal.

After that I like this credo: (I wish I could remember where it came from)
If not local, then organic.
If not organic, then family (or small) farm.
If not family farm, then local business.
If not a local business, then fair trade.

I also take in consideration the level of processing and packaging but don’t get me wrong, I cheat too.

I wish I had some wisdom to offer here … I don’t. I, too, prefer (and try to buy) both local and organic, but its not always possible. Typically, I’ll choose organic as my first preference … but I don’t know if that’s truly the wise choice. I’m going to link my post today to yours … and perhaps the two people who read mine will have some thoughts!
